The rain came in the night, the kind that does not stop. It is not a shower. It is a sustained, gray weight against the window glass. Mara stands in her kitchen in her underwear, holding a half-eaten sandwich. The bread is dry. The tomato is wet. She does not eat it. She looks out the window at the garden she spent three months building. The rows of beans she planted by hand are now brown sludge. The trellis is bent. The soil is a river.
She is not sad. Sadness would be quiet. She is furious. Her chest is tight. Her hands are shaking on the counter. She thinks of the hours she spent on her knees in that dirt, her back aching, her hands dirty. She thinks of the promise she made to her daughter that they would have fresh vegetables this summer. She looks up at the ceiling. The light fixture hums. She feels a heat rise in her throat. She is angry at God. She is not sure if that is allowed. She feels like she has crossed a line. Still, she feels like a bad daughter. She wants to scream, but she is afraid that if she opens her mouth, the words will be too ugly. So she stands there, holding the cold sandwich, waiting for the anger to pass, waiting for permission to be mad.
The Door Is Already Open
You are standing in your kitchen with a half-eaten sandwich and a heart that is on fire. You are looking at the damage. You are asking if you are allowed to be this angry. You are afraid that your anger is a sin. You are afraid that if you tell God how you really feel, He will stop loving you. You are waiting for Him to say, "Be quiet. Be thankful. Fix it." He is not saying that. He is not turning away. He is not holding His breath. He is not waiting for you to get your act together before you speak. The written word says you are no longer a stranger but a member of the household. The Holy Spirit confirms this standing in your spirit. You are not a guest who has overstayed. You are not a visitor who must knock and explain why you are there. You are a son. You are a daughter. You are family. And family can yell.
This is the truth that changes everything. The Holy Spirit, who dwells in you, does not flinch when you are honest. He is not a judge sitting on a throne, waiting for you to miss a step. He is the presence of the Father Himself, breathing in your room, and He is not offended by your raw emotion. He is not waiting for you to be polite. He is waiting for you to be real. The Spirit knows the depth of your pain because He is the one who gave you the capacity to feel it. He does not see your anger as rebellion. He sees it as a cry. He sees it as a heart that is still attached to Him. If you were truly gone, you would not be angry. You would be indifferent. Your anger is proof that you still care. It is proof that you still believe He is in charge. The Spirit is not repelled by the heat of your emotion. He is drawn to the honesty of it. He is the one who intercedes for you when you do not have the words. He is the one who groans in you when you are too overwhelmed to speak. Scripture puts it plainly: the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. That standing is not based on your performance. It is not based on your calm. It is based on His word. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. That mark does not come off when you are angry. It does not fade when you are confused. It holds.
You are not disqualified by your anger. You are not a broken machine that needs to be repaired before it can be plugged back in. You are a living person, made in the image of a God who felt anger Himself. Jesus was angry. He overturned the tables. He called the religious leaders a brood of vipers. He wept. He was troubled. He did not perform calm. He did not pretend to be fine. He was fully human, and He was fully God, and He did not separate the two. The same word that named you as family stands firm. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. That seal is the anchor of your identity. You do not have to separate your humanity from your divinity. You do not have to leave your anger at the door. You can bring it with you. You can set it on the table. You can say, "I am mad. I do not understand. I am hurt." And you can mean it. You can be loud. You can be messy. You can be ugly. The Holy Spirit is not shocked by your ugliness. He has seen the worst of you. He has seen the thoughts you are ashamed of. He has seen the moments you tried to hide from everyone else. And He did not leave. He stayed. He is the one who seals you as His. He is the one who puts His mark on you. That mark does not come off when you are angry. It does not fade when you are confused. It holds.
You are not a burden to Him. You are not a problem He is trying to solve. You are a treasure He is holding. He is not annoyed by your questions. He is not tired of your doubts. He is not keeping score of your failures. He is not waiting for you to earn His love. He has already given it to you. It is finished. It is done. It is yours. The word says He predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit bears witness to this truth in your heart. You do not have to perform gratitude to receive it. You do not have to suppress your pain to keep it. You can grieve and you can be grateful at the same time. You can be furious and you can be faithful at the same time. The Holy Spirit holds both. He does not ask you to choose. He does not ask you to be one thing or the other. He asks you to be you. He is the comforter. He is the one who comforts you in your sorrow. He is the one who strengthens you in your weakness. He is the one who reminds you of who you are when you forget. He is not a distant force. He is a person. He is the second person of the Trinity, and He loves you with a love that does not change.
You are not alone in this kitchen. You are not alone in this anger. You are not alone in this confusion. You are accompanied. You are held. You are seen. The Holy Spirit is with you. He is in the room. He is in your heart. He is in your mind. He is in your body. He is everywhere you are. He is not waiting for you to leave. He is not waiting for you to fix the garden. He is not waiting for you to clean up the mess. He is here, right now, in the middle of the storm. He is here, in the middle of your anger. He is here, in the middle of your doubt. He is the one who makes it possible for you to speak. He is the one who gives you the courage to be honest. He is the one who takes your rough, unpolished words and brings them to the Father. You do not have to make them perfect. You do not have to make them theological. You do not have to make them impressive. You just have to make them true. The Holy Spirit is the bridge between your brokenness and God's wholeness. He is the one who carries your cry up. He is the one who brings God's presence down. He is the one who makes the connection.
"As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
Look at the sandwich in your hand. Look at the rain outside. Yet, look at the garden that is gone. You are looking at a loss. You are looking at a failure. Still, you are looking at a storm. But you are not looking at the end. You are looking at the middle. And the middle is not where you stay. You are not stuck here. You are not trapped in this anger. And, you are not locked in this kitchen. You are free to move. You are free to speak. Now, you are free to bring this to the Father. Not a fixed version of it. Not a polished version of it. This version. The raw, messy, angry, confused version. Bring it. Set it down. Tell Him. Say, "I am angry." Say, "I am hurt." Say, "I don't understand." Say, "I am afraid." And then stop. And wait. And listen. What God has written is that you have boldness and access with confidence. The Holy Spirit is already there. He is already speaking to you. He is already comforting you. He is already holding you. You do not have to do anything else. You do not have to fix it. Yet, you do not have to earn it. You do not have to qualify. You just have to receive. The door is open. You are inside. You are home.
Declare this over yourself
- Rain, your season is finished and you do not own my identity. The written word says I am a child of God, and the Holy Spirit has sealed that adoption in my heart. I am standing in my kitchen, and I am not a guest waiting to be shown in.
- The fear that my anger is a sin, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the mediator who carries my raw cry to the Father, and the Spirit of God leads me as a son. I am not a bad daughter who must fix her heart before she can speak, because I am bringing this version of myself to the table.
- Father, You are in the room with me, and I am not waiting for permission to be real. The word says I have boldness and access with confidence, so I am setting the sandwich down and speaking my truth to You now. I am home, and I am free to move.
