The rain hit the windshield in heavy, flat sheets. The wipers beat against the glass, a rhythmic, mechanical thud that marked time in the empty church parking lot. Marcus sat behind the wheel, the engine off, the silence inside the car thick and heavy. He had just left the service. The sermon had been brilliant. The pastor had spoken with such fire, such clarity, that the whole room seemed to lean in. Marcus had nodded along. He had felt the truth of it intellectually. He knew what was right. He could have explained it to anyone over coffee the next morning.
But he felt nothing.
That was the problem. Not the knowing, but the feeling. Or rather, the total absence of it. For three years, the warmth had faded. The tears had dried up. The songs that once broke his heart now passed through him like wind through an open window. He sat in the back pew, safe and unseen, watching the people around him. Some were weeping. Some were laughing. Still, some were gripping the arms of their chairs. Marcus felt like a ghost in his own life. He was present, but he was not there. He was not connected. He was not alive.
The fear that sat in his chest was not about God. It was about himself. He was terrified that the dryness was a symptom. He was terrified that the lack of feeling meant the lack of faith. He had read enough theology to know that feelings were not the measure of faith. But knowing it did not stop the panic. If he did not feel it, was he still in it? If the fire was gone, was the house still standing? He looked at his hands on the steering wheel. They were steady. They were dry. He turned the key. The engine turned over, a low rumble in the quiet dark. He did not start the car. He just sat there, in the rain, waiting for a spark that did not come.
The Standing Is Not The Feeling
You are not a pattern. It is written that the servant does not abide in the house for ever, but the Son abides for ever. Your standing is fixed by the Word and sealed by the Holy Spirit who dwells within.
A machine breaks when the display goes dark, but a living body does not fail because the screen is black. The feeling is merely the display. The standing is the body itself. That standing was given, not earned. The Holy Spirit, who seals the inheritance, does not withdraw because the heart feels cold. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His presence is a constant, not a variable. The promise stands that you are accepted in the Beloved.
When the rain stops, the water does not vanish. It simply reflects the sky instead of the storm. Dryness is a change in the light, not an absence of God. The Spirit who was given is still holding the soul in place. He is moving. He is working. He is quiet, but He is there, breathing life into the stillness.
You are judging the ocean by the surface temperature. The surface can freeze or boil, but the depth remains. The Holy Spirit is that depth. He is not the mood on the surface. He is the water that holds the ship steady while the waves crash above. The Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God.
The car has been moving since the moment of trust. The engine runs without the need for a feeling of vibration. The gauge does not need to be seen to know it is full. The windshield shows the road ahead. The written word says you are a new creation. It is settled that you are seated in heavenly places. He has promised that you are more than a conqueror. The Spirit applies that word to your life right now. You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
The earth does not die in winter. It rests and gathers strength in the dark soil. The soul does the same. The Holy Spirit is the breath of life that keeps the seed alive when nothing is visible above ground. Seeds do not feel. They wait. He rejoices over you with gladness and quiets you with His love.
"As many as received him, to him he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
You are looking at the dryness and you are calling it death. But you are looking at a shadow and calling it the absence of the sun. The sun is still there. The light is still hitting the wall. The shadow is just where the light is not falling yet. You are in the shadow. But you are not in the dark. The Holy Spirit is the light, and His word says that He will quiet you with His love, even when the surface feels cold.
The fear that you have lost your faith is the final wall between you and the rest. It is the last thing you are holding onto. And it is the only thing that is keeping you in the back pew. Not the distance. Not the silence. The fear. You are afraid that if you step forward, you will find that there is no one there. But there is. There has always been someone there. The Holy Spirit is not a feeling. He is a Person. And He is not gone. He is waiting for you to stop looking at the shadow and start looking at the light. His word says you are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, and Christ has settled that standing in the Word.
You do not need to feel it to know it. You do not need to see the fire to know the heat is coming. Still, you just need to trust the One who is holding the match. He is not waiting for your permission. He is not waiting for your feelings. He is waiting for your hand. And your hand is open. It has always been open. You just forgot.
Declare this over yourself
- Back pew, your silence is not a verdict; it is a shadow cast by the light that is still hitting the wall. The written Word says I am a new creation seated in heavenly places, and that standing was given, not earned. I am here, and the engine is running under the hood whether I feel the vibration or not.
- Fear, get out of my chest. You are not the truth, you are a lie dressed up in a true fact, and I evict you in the name of Jesus. My hands are still working and still faithful, and the Holy Spirit testifies that my warmth is the weight of my standing.
- Father, I come in without knocking because I live here. The seal of my inheritance does not withdraw because my heart feels cold, and I am not waiting to be shown in. I am resting in the winter, and the breath of life is keeping the seed alive in the dark soil.
