The Mountain Is Out Today

This message is for I am the only member of my small group who has never called anyone 'Dad' in a spiritual sense, and the silence around me has become so loud I am considering leaving the group

The phone sat on the kitchen table, screen up. The glass was cracked in the corner, a spiderweb of white lines that had been there for three months. Mara stared at it. The group chat had been active for an hour. Messages were stacking up. One person shared a testimony about a job. Another posted a photo of a sunrise with the caption, "Father, thank You." A third replied, "Amen, Dad, we see Your hand."

Mara's thumb hovered over the glass. She wanted to type. She wanted to say something. She wanted to feel the warmth of the circle that formed around those words. But the word "Dad" felt like a stone in her shoe. It was not just a word. It was a door she had never opened. In her mind, the title belonged to someone else, a man who was not God, and to use it for the Creator felt like a theft. Or worse, it felt like a lie.

So she did not type. She set the phone down. The silence in the kitchen grew heavy. It was not a peaceful silence. It was the silence of a held breath. She felt the pull to leave. Not just the group, but the faith. If the language of her people was a wall she could not climb, perhaps the house was not built for her. She looked at the mountain through the window. Rainier was out today. The peak was sharp against the gray sky, white and unmoving. It did not ask for her permission to stand. It simply was. And yet, in that moment, the distance between her and the summit felt like a canyon.

The Standing Is Not The Feeling

You are standing in a room where the air feels thick, and the fear is telling you that you are an outsider who has been caught. That fear is a liar. You are not a stranger here. You are a child, and the child does not need to know every word in the family dialect to belong to the family. The bond is not linguistic. It is covenantal.

The Holy Spirit does not grade you on your terminology. He looks at the heart. He sees the ache in your silence. He is not offended by your pause. You have been given the right to be His child. Ephesians 1:13 says you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, and that seal is not contingent on your comfort level with a title. It is contingent on the One who died for you.

John 1:12 gives you the legal ground for this. As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God. The key word is right. It is a standing. It is a status. It is not a feeling. It is not a performance. It is a fact that was settled in the past and is being applied to you in the present. You do not have to earn it. You do not have to perform it. You only have to receive it.

"But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name."John 1:12

You are holding a status that is higher than your current emotion. When the feeling says you do not belong, the status says you are mine. The feeling is the weather. The status is the climate. The weather changes. The climate holds. You are not a pattern of silence. You are a person of standing. The Holy Spirit is the One who seals that standing in you. He is not looking for a perfect pronunciation. He is looking for a surrendered heart. And He sees it.

The mountain does not move because you cannot see it. It does not lose its height because the clouds are thick. It is still there. The source of the water is still there. You can drink from it without climbing to the top. You can live in the valley and still be fed by the mountain. Your participation in the communal vocabulary is not the price of admission. Your faith in Christ is the only requirement. And that faith is already present in you. It is the root of the tree. The words are just the leaves. If the leaves fall, the tree remains.

You are not defined by your silence. You are defined by your Son. Jesus Christ is the one who opened the door. He did not say you must speak a specific word. He said you must receive His life. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that life real in you. He is not a judge standing with a red pen. He is a lover standing with open arms. Galatians 4:6 says God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, and that Spirit is the proof that you belong here.

Let the silence speak. Let the silence say you are here. You are allowed to sit in the shelter without speaking. You are allowed to listen. You are allowed to let the love wash over you without adding your voice to the chorus. The chorus is beautiful, but it is not the only way to worship. Silence is a valid form of prayer. Silence is a valid form of trust. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now, and the written word confirms that you are not alone in your stillness.

You are not an outsider. You are a guest of honor. The host is Jesus. And He has made a place for you at the table. You do not need to ask for it. It is already set. The chair is pulled out. The plate is clean. The light is on. The only thing you have to do is sit down. Ephesians 2:19 says you are fellow citizens and members of the household of God, and the Holy Spirit confirms it beside you now.

The breakthrough

You are looking at the group chat, and you are ready to leave. You are ready to close the app. Now, you are ready to walk away from the only circle that has ever tried to hold you. But stop. Do not walk away from the shelter because the language of the shelter is difficult for you. The shelter is still there. The warmth is still there. The love is still there. Scripture puts it plainly that you have boldness and access with confidence, and the Holy Spirit guides you into all truth as you remain.

The breakthrough is not in finding the right word. Yet, the breakthrough is in finding the right standing. You have the standing. You have the right. Still, you have the relationship. The word is optional. The relationship is essential. You do not have to say "Dad" to be a child. You do not have to say "Father" to be loved. And, you only have to believe that you are loved. And you are. Christ has settled that standing in the Word.

The Holy Spirit is working in you right now. He is not waiting for you to speak. He is working in the silence. He is taking the silence and turning it into a sanctuary. He is taking the fear and turning it into faith. Now, he is taking the distance and turning it into intimacy. You do not have to force it. You do not have to push. Yet, you just have to let it be.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Group chat, your silence is not a verdict on my belonging. The written Word says I am a child because I received Christ, and the Holy Spirit seals that truth in my heart. I am sitting in this shelter right now, and my standing is already set.
  2. Fear that I am the only one who cannot say it, get out of my house. Scripture puts it plainly that I am a son, not a servant, and the same Spirit bears witness to that identity. I am holding that truth in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord, You are the source that feeds me even when I stay in the valley. I am letting the silence become my prayer while I rest in the truth that You see my heart. I am safe here, and I am not leaving.
