The Word That Sticks

This message is for My elderly mother calls me 'honey' and 'baby' with a tenderness that makes me physically nauseous, yet I cannot explain to her that I do not reject her love, only the word

The kitchen table is covered in a plastic tablecloth with a sunflower pattern. The plastic is yellowing at the edges, curling slightly where the heat from the coffee mugs has warped it. Your mother sits across from you. She is eighty-two. Her hands are folded on the table, the skin thin and mapped with blue veins. She looks up at you with eyes that are bright and clear. She leans forward, just an inch, and says, "Oh, honey, you look so tired. Come here, baby. Let me fix your hair."

Your stomach turns. It is a physical lurch, a cold wave of nausea that hits you in the throat. You do not want to move. You do not want to be touched. The word baby lands in your ears like a stone in a well, and the sound of it makes your skin crawl. You want to scream, but instead you say, "Thanks, Mom. I am okay." She smiles, oblivious to the war happening in your chest. She reaches out and smooths a strand of hair from your forehead. Her fingers are cool. You flinch. She pulls her hand back, confused. "What is it?" she asks. "Did I do something wrong?"

You are not angry at her. You love her. But the word baby has a weight that is not hers. It belongs to a past that is not yours to carry anymore. You cannot explain to her that you do not reject her love, only the word. You cannot tell her that your body remembers something your mind has already let go of. Still, you sit there, smiling, while the nausea settles in your gut. You are trapped in a moment that should be tender but feels like a cage. The door is right there. You just have to walk through it. But the word baby is the lock, and you have lost the key.

The Standing You Already Hold

There is a difference between a feeling and a fact. The body is reacting to a memory. That memory is real. It is a biological echo of a time when that word was a threat, or a trap, or a chain. The echo is not the original sound. Standing in the house of God is not an echo. It is the ground that holds. It is written that you are Mine, and the Holy Spirit seals that truth in your heart.

You are not defined by the words that hurt you. You are not a collection of reactions. You are a child of the Most High. This is not a suggestion. It is the legal reality of your life right now. The Holy Spirit who lives in you is the seal of that reality. It is written that you are fellow citizens and members of the household of God, and no word from the past can change your citizenship.

Consider the nature of the house. A house is not defined by the noise outside the windows. A storm may rage against the walls. Rain may batter the roof. The sound may be deafening. But the foundation is not made of sound. The foundation is stone. Identity in Christ is stone. The word baby is just weather. It is wind. It passes. It does not shake the stone. The rock does not care what the wind says. The rock holds.

"But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."John 1:12

You were born of God. That means your identity is not built on what your mother calls you. It is not built on what your body remembers. It is built on what God says. And what God says is that you are His. The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. It is written that you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

A person is not a victim of their history. They are a citizen of a new kingdom. The Holy Spirit has given a new birth, and that new birth overrides every old pattern. The old pattern says, I am the one who was hurt. The new birth says, I am the one who is loved. There is no need to choose between the two. There is no need to deny the pain. The new birth covers the old pain. The pain is real, but it is not the owner. The promise stands that one is no longer a servant but a son.

You are not waiting for permission to be free. You are not waiting for your mother to change the word. You are not waiting for your body to stop reacting. You are already free. The freedom is not a feeling. It is a fact. The Holy Spirit is the guarantor of that fact. He is the one who says, This is true, even if it does not feel true yet. You can trust the fact more than you can trust the feeling. The feeling is weather. The fact is climate. It is written that you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

When that word is heard, the body reacts. That is okay. Let the body react. Do not fight the nausea. Do not fight the flinch. But do not let the reaction rewrite the story. The story is already written. The story is that love is present. The story is that safety is real. The story is that home is found. The Holy Spirit is the one who writes that story in the heart. He is not writing a new story. He is reminding of the one that is already there. It is written that He made us accepted in the Beloved.

You are not alone in this struggle. Many people carry words that hurt. Many people have bodies that remember things their minds have forgotten. But you are not alone in your standing. You are held by the hand of God. That hand is stronger than any memory. That hand is stronger than any word. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds you when your own hands are shaking. He is the one who keeps you steady when the ground feels like it is moving. It is written that He rejoices over you with gladness and quiets you with His love.

You are not a pattern. You are a person. A pattern is a thing that repeats. A person is a thing that changes. You are changing. You are growing. Still, you are moving. The word baby is a pattern from the past. You are a person in the present. The Holy Spirit is the one who is changing you, not the word. He is the one who is moving you, not the memory. You are in the middle of a journey, and the journey is leading you home. Christ has settled that standing in the Word. It is written that in whom we have boldness and access with confidence.

The breakthrough

The nausea is still there. The word is still stuck in your throat. But you are not stuck. You are standing. The standing is not a feeling. It is a place. You are in the place of the Son. You are in the house of the Father. The word baby is outside the door. It cannot come in. It has no key. You have the key. The key is the truth. The truth is that you are loved. The truth is that you are free. The truth is that you are home.

You do not have to explain it to your mother. You do not have to change the word. Now, you just have to hold your standing. When she says baby, you do not have to react. You can just be. You can just stand. The Holy Spirit is with you. He is holding you. He is keeping you steady. You are not defined by the word. You are defined by the One who loves you. Scripture stands beneath that truth.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Nausea, you are a weather system passing through, not the climate that defines my home. The written word says I am a child of God, born of His spirit and not of the flesh, so this old echo has no legal right to rewrite my citizenship. My standing is secure because the Holy Spirit has sealed my new birth.
  2. Shame that I flinch at the tenderness I do not reject, get out of my heart in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts it plainly that you are no longer a servant but a son, and I am a citizen of a new kingdom that is already here. The Holy Spirit fills the space where that fear used to live with the settled peace of His presence.
  3. Father, I am holding my place in Your house with my hand on my heart, right now. His word says I am accepted in the Beloved, and I do not wait for the nausea to pass to know I am safe in You. I am resting in the fact that You are holding me, and that is enough.
