The Standing You Cannot Earn

The kitchen table is cold. David sits at the head, his hands wrapped around a mug that went cold an hour ago. He is looking at the empty chair across from him. It is the chair where his son usually sits before school. The chair is empty because the boy left an hour ago without saying a word. David's jaw is tight. He is not angry at the boy. He is angry at himself. He feels a hollow space in his chest where pride should be. He looks at the coffee ring on the table and thinks, I am a failure. If I were a better father, this would not be happening. He whispers a prayer, but it is not a prayer of faith. It is a plea. Fix him, God. Make him come back. Make me feel like a father again. The silence in the kitchen is loud. It tells him he has lost his standing. It tells him that because the outcome is wrong, he is disqualified. He sits there, waiting for the feeling of pride to return so he can believe he is still accepted.

You Were Chosen Before the Fruit

The ache is heavy. It feels like a verdict. A parent looks at the rebellion in a child and the lack of pride in their own heart, and the mind concludes that they have failed. The standing with God is believed to be tied to the successful outcome of parenting. That is the lie that makes one beg for a result that cannot be controlled. Ephesians 2:19 says you are fellow citizens and members of the household of God. The Holy Spirit confirms this standing in your heart, independent of any human performance.

You are not disqualified by your son's choices. Ephesians 1:5 says He predestined us to adoption as sons. The Holy Spirit confirms this written truth in your spirit right now. The feeling of disqualification is a lie because it puts the power of your identity in the wrong hands. You have handed your identity to the behavior of another human being. That is a burden you were never meant to carry. When you tie your worth to their outcome, you are no longer standing on the Word. You are standing on a shifting foundation of their moods and decisions. That foundation cracks every time they disappoint you. And every time it cracks, you feel the ground fall out from under you.

A parent looks for a feeling of pride to prove a place in God's family. But feelings are weather. They come and go. They do not define the climate of the covenant. Pride is a natural emotion that arises when expectations are met. When expectations are not met, pride dies. If standing depends on pride, standing is temporary. It is fragile. It is built on sand. But acceptance is not built on sand. It is built on the rock of God's unchanging character.

You are a child of God. John 1:12 tells us that to those who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God. The Holy Spirit seals that right in you today. Read that verse again. It does not say we were given the right if we raise obedient children. It does not say we are children while our sons are in rebellion. It says we were given the right. The right is granted. It is a gift. It is not a wage. It is not a reward for good parenting. It is not a penalty for bad parenting. You are here. You are praying. You are seeking. That is the mark of a child of God.

The enemy wants a parent to think that love for a son is a transaction. Love, guidance, and discipline are given, and obedience and pride are expected in return. When the price is not paid, the feeling is one of being cheated. But love is not a transaction. Love is a covenant. A covenant is not based on performance. It is based on promise. God's promise to a parent is not contingent on a son's behavior. His promise is contingent on His character. And His character does not change when a son does.

You are a child of God while the word Father is difficult to say. This is the truth of Christ, who is the Father's Son, and the Holy Spirit keeps you secure in that identity even when your feelings say otherwise. There is a difference between feeling like a father and being a father. Being is a fact. Feeling is a reaction. You can be a father and feel like a failure. You can be a child of God and feel disqualified. The fact does not change because the feeling does. The sun does not stop shining because it is cloudy. God's love does not stop because your heart is dark. You do not have to feel proud to be accepted. You do not have to feel successful to be loved. You just have to believe that He is who He says He is.

Breakthrough begins when a parent stops trying to earn standing and starts resting in it. It begins when the job is seen not as controlling a son's life, but as standing in one's own identity. When one stands in identity, reactivity fades. The begging for a result ceases. Resting in a fact changes everything. It changes prayers. It changes peace. It changes the relationship with a son. Service no longer comes out of fear. It comes out of freedom.

You are a child of God, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for your son to change to confirm your worth. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. This testimony does not depend on your family's dynamics. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes the Word alive in you. He is the one who reminds you of who you are when the world tells you who you are not. He does not need your son's obedience to do His work. He works in you, through you, and for you, regardless of the circumstances. He is the guarantee of your inheritance. He is the deposit of your future. He is the one who holds you when you feel like you are falling apart. You do not have to hold yourself up. You do not have to prove yourself. You just have to let Him hold you.

You are not defined by the empty chair, but by the Fullness of Christ. It is written that He has called you by your name, and you are His. The Holy Spirit fills you with that power so you can stand firm in the storm. The empty chair is a painful reality. It is a reminder of the distance. But it is not the end of the story. The story is bigger than one room. The story is bigger than one family. The story is the story of redemption. And you are in that story. You are not an observer. You are a participant. You are a child of the King. And the King has not turned His face away from you. He is looking at you with love. He is looking at you with pride. Not the pride of a father who is pleased with a performance, but the pride of a Father who is pleased with His child.
