The kitchen light hums at a frequency that only she can hear. It is a low, electric buzz that vibrates in her teeth. She sits at the table, the one with the wobbly leg that she keeps propping up with a folded receipt. Her hands are wrapped around a mug of tea that went cold an hour ago. The steam is long gone, but she keeps holding it because the warmth is the last thing that feels like it belongs to her.
She is looking at her phone. It is face down. She does not pick it up. She is counting. Not the money in the account, though that is empty. Not the hours until her shift starts, though that is soon. She is counting the strikes. The first one was the argument with her sister, three days ago. The second was the mistake at work, yesterday, where she missed a deadline and the manager's face went tight. The third was the silence she felt in prayer this morning, a silence so loud it felt like a verdict.
Three strikes. The old story says there is a fourth. Or a fifth. Or a final one. She has read the verses about discipline until the words blurred. Hebrews 12:6 says the Lord disciplines the one He loves. She has read that line until she believed it meant He was packing His bags. She believes that every mistake is a brick laid in the wall between her and the Father. She believes that if she slips one more time, the door will close. Not gently. Not with a warning. It will just close. And she will be on the outside, looking through the glass, watching the light inside, knowing she is no longer invited.
So she sits in the humming kitchen. She waits for the eviction notice. She waits for the feeling of being cast out. She does not feel it. She feels only the hum of the light and the cold tea and the weight of her own fear. Still, she is not ready to sleep. She is not ready to live. She is just waiting to be told she is no longer allowed to stay.
The Misread Map
There is a lie that has lived in the church for a long time. It says that God's discipline is a countdown. It says that every time you fail, the clock ticks down. You are not close to hitting a tolerance limit. That countdown is not in Scripture. John 8:35 says the servant does not abide in the house for ever, but the Son abides for ever. The Holy Spirit does not tick a clock. He confirms your standing as a child who belongs.
You are reading the map wrong. The map is not a list of your failures. The map is a picture of your standing. You are not a tenant. You are not a guest who can be kicked out for spilling coffee on the rug. You are a child. A child is not evicted for breaking a plate. You are cleaned up. You are comforted. You are held. It is already settled that you belong in this house.
You are not a pattern of mistakes. You are a person held in grace. The Holy Spirit is not a prosecutor building a case against you. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. He testifies to the fact that you belong. He does not point at your sin and say, look what they did. He points at the cross and says, look at what it did for you. The Spirit is the comforter. He reminds you that the Father's heart is not hard. It is broken for you.
The discipline you feel is not the anger of a landlord. It is the grief of a parent. When a father corrects a child, it is not because he wants to remove the child from the house. He wants the child to stay. He wants the child to be safe. The rod is not a tool of eviction. It is a tool of protection. It is the hand that stops the child from running into traffic. It is the voice that says, no, that will hurt you. It is the love that refuses to let you destroy yourself.
You are not being prepared for removal. You are being prepared for life. The Holy Spirit makes that preparation real. He takes the truth of your sonship and makes it feel true in your body. He fights the lie that you are an outsider. Ephesians 1:5 says He predestined us to adoption as sons. The Spirit whispers, you are home.
"As many as received him, to him he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
Look at your hands. Look at the tea in your mug. And, look at the light in the room. You are still here. You are not in the hallway. Now, you are not on the street. You are in the house. The door is not closed. It was never locked. You are the one who has been holding the handle, afraid to turn it. You have been standing on the threshold, waiting for permission to step fully in. The word says you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens and members of the household of God. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now.
The permission is already given. It was given the moment you believed. It was given the moment you received. It is not a future gift. It is a present possession. You are not waiting for the Father to change His mind. He has not changed His mind. He has not shifted His gaze. He is looking at you with the same face He looked at Jesus. And He is not counting your strikes. He is counting your steps toward Him. He is not waiting for you to be perfect. He is waiting for you to be present.
You are not a problem to be solved. You are a son to be embraced. The Holy Spirit is the seal of that embrace. The Spirit is the deposit that guarantees the inheritance. The Spirit is the proof that you are not a guest. You are family. And family does not evict family. Family stays. Family fights for you. Yet, family loves you when you are at your worst. Scripture gives that sentence its footing.
Declare this over yourself
- The humming kitchen light, you are not an eviction notice. The word says I stand in the house because John 1:12 gave me the right to be a child. The Holy Spirit confirms I am not a guest who can be kicked out.
- Fear that I am packing my bags to leave, get out of my chest. In the name of Jesus, the Holy Spirit seals me as home and not a lodger. The Father does not count my strikes as a countdown; He counts my steps toward Him as a welcome.
- Father, You are looking at me with the same face You looked at Jesus. The word says I am already seated in the house, and I stop packing. I stay because the Spirit of adoption has already made this my permanent address.
