The clock on the wall reads 4:15. It is a digital clock, the kind with bright red numbers that look like they are bleeding into the white face. Elias sits in the folding chair at the back of the church hall. The chair is metal, cold through the denim of his jeans. He holds a clipboard. The clipboard is empty. For twelve years, that clipboard held the attendance sheet, the names of forty kids, the notes on who was struggling and who was laughing too loud. Today, the paper is blank. He looks at the blank page, and then he looks at the empty room. The tables are pushed against the wall. The juice boxes are gone. The energy is gone. He feels a tightness in his chest that feels like a door slamming shut. He is fifty years old. He has given the best part of his life to this room. Now the room is quiet, and he feels like a ghost in his own life. He wonders if he is still useful. He wonders if anyone would notice if he stopped coming. He picks up the clipboard, but his hand does not want to hold it. It feels heavy. It feels like a thing that belongs to someone else.
You Are Not Your Job
That whisper is a lie. It says value is tied to utility. It treats identity as a lease with an expiration date. When the date passes, the building is no longer yours. The person is just a guest waiting to be asked to leave. This thought makes the soul feel small. It claims love is earned by work. Stop working, and you are forgotten. That is not how the house works. The written word does not define you by output. The Holy Spirit does not measure your worth by your activity. You are not defined by your task list. You are not a guest waiting to be evicted.
Your name is written in the book of life. The Holy Spirit has recorded it, and that record does not change when your duties do. You are not a task list. You are a person. You are a child of the King. Your standing in the house is based on who you are, not what you do. It is settled. The promise stands: you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father. Your position is secure. The written word and the Holy Spirit both confirm this standing today.
Think of a child in a family. Does the mother love her son less because he is in high school instead of kindergarten? Does the father stop providing for his daughter just because she has left for college? No. The love is not conditional on productivity. It is based on the relationship. The child is a child. That is everything. The bond is not a contract. It is family. And family does not expire. God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into hearts to confirm this bond. The relationship outlasts the role.
The Holy Spirit is the witness that you are an heir. An heir does not pay rent. You have been given a new identity. That seal is permanent. You are not a guest waiting for the bill. You are a member of the family. That membership is for good. You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. This is not a temporary arrangement. It is your birthright. The written word and the Spirit stand together to confirm this inheritance.
This is where the ache comes in. The weight has been carried for a long time. Worth has been measured by output. Now that the output is gone, the worth feels gone with it. But that is a measurement error. The wrong thing has been measured. Service was never the point. Service was the fruit. The root is the relationship with Jesus. The fruit can change. The seasons change. The garden looks different in winter than it does in spring. But the tree is still the tree. The root remains intact.
The Holy Spirit is the author of your life. He does not write you out of the story just because the chapter changes. You are not a pattern of performance. You are not a lodger. You are not a temporary worker. You are a member of the family. And that membership is for good. He rejoices over you with gladness and quiets you with His love. The written word and the Spirit agree. You are home.
"As many as received him, to him he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
You are looking at the empty room. You are looking at the blank clipboard. Still, you are feeling the loss. It is real. It is painful. But you are not alone in this. You are not the first person to feel this way. And you are not the last. This is a passage. It is a transition. You are moving from a season of doing to a season of being. This is not a demotion. This is an elevation. You are being invited to rest in who you are. You are being invited to receive. And, you have given so much. Now it is time to take. You have served the house. Now it is time to sit in the house. You have been the hand. Now you can be the heart. You are not losing your place. You are finding your place. The place where you are loved for who you are, not for what you do. The place where you are free to exist. The place where you are home. Scripture puts it plainly: you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens and members of the household of God. The Holy Spirit confirms this standing in your heart.
Declare this over yourself
- Empty room, your silence has no right to define my worth. The Holy Spirit is the witness that I am an heir, and an heir does not pay rent. I am not a guest waiting for the bill.
- Fear that I am no longer useful, get out of my mind in the name of Jesus. My standing is not a lease with an expiration date, for I have been sealed by the Spirit. I am home, and I stop packing my bags.
- God, You brought me in for good, and I am sitting in my chair right now. I am not an employee who has been fired; I am family who has found rest. I am staying.
