The kitchen light in the parish house was the only one on in the building. It was a sickly yellow that made the dust motes look like suspended snow. Arthur stood by the sink, holding a chipped ceramic mug. The coffee inside was cold. He had been standing there for forty minutes, watching the water drip from the tap into the basin. One drop. A pause. Another drop. He had served in that church for thirty years. He had laid hands on the sick. He had buried the young and the old. He had spent his Sundays on his feet and his Mondays in the pews, listening to the same problems, the same doubts, the same quiet prayers. Still, he felt like a candle that had been lit in a drafty window. The wax was gone. The wick was black and brittle. He was certain that God had looked at him and seen only the soot. He believed that his joy had been used up, spent on other people's emergencies, leaving him with nothing but the habit of standing. He was not angry at God. He was tired of being useful. And, he was tired of being a container that had no bottom.
The Fire Was Not Your Job
You are not a battery that empties with use. You are not a pattern of depletion. You are a channel, and a channel does not burn out because it carries the water. It only stops when the source stops flowing. The Holy Spirit is the source, and the Spirit is the one who refills the vessel. The word says that as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. The world tells you that joy is a reward for performance. It tells you that your exhaustion is a moral failing. That is a lie. You were never the source. You are the channel. The source is eternal.
You are not defined by your output. You are not a ledger of good deeds. You are a beloved son, and the love of the Father is not a transaction. It is a disposition. It is who He is. The Spirit does not look at your thirty years of service and see a debt paid. The Spirit sees the one who was loved before the first Sunday morning. The delight of the Father is not renewable because you keep it alive. It is renewable because He keeps it alive. You do not have to manufacture joy. You do not have to earn it back. You only have to stop pretending that you are the one holding the fire.
"As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
You are not an orphan searching for approval. You are not a servant waiting for a wage. You are a child of the King. This is not a future hope. This is your standing right now. The right to be a child of God is not earned by your endurance. It is given by your reception. You received Him. You believed. And that act secured your identity forever. The Holy Spirit confirms this truth in your heart. The Spirit is the seal. The Spirit is the proof. You do not have to prove your worth to the Father. He knows. He sees. And He is not disappointed in you. He is looking at you with delight.
The exhaustion you feel is real. The weariness in your bones is real. But the conclusion you have drawn from those facts is wrong. You have concluded that if you are tired, you have been used up. But being tired is not the same as being used up. A candle burns, but it does not cease to be a candle. The wax melts, but the flame remains. The flame is not the wax. The flame is the fire. And the fire is not yours. The fire is His. You are the wick. A wick can be sooted. A wick can be charred. But a wick does not cease to be a wick. It is still there. It is still ready. When the light returns, it will burn again. Not because you forced it. But because the oil is still there. The oil is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit does not run out. The Spirit does not burn out. The Spirit is the eternal fire that does not need your effort to keep it burning.
You are not a burden to the Father. You are not a project that He is trying to fix. You are a delight to Him. This is not a compliment. This is the truth of your standing in Christ. The Father takes delight in you. Not because of what you did on Sunday. Not because of how well you handled the crisis on Tuesday. He takes delight in you because you are His. Because you are clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Your value is not in your performance. Your value is in your position. And your position is secure. The Holy Spirit holds you in that position. He has promised that you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. The Spirit is the anchor. The Spirit is the one who keeps you from drifting into the belief that you are alone. You are not alone. You are held. You are known. You are loved. And that love does not depend on your energy level. It depends only on the character of God. And the character of God is unchanging.
Look at the empty mug in your hand. Look at the cold coffee. And, look at the dark kitchen. You have been waiting for a feeling to tell you that you are still loved. You have been waiting for a surge of energy to prove that you are still useful. But the feeling is not the proof. The energy is not the proof. The proof is the Word. The proof is the fact that you received Him. The proof is the fact that the Holy Spirit lives in you. The written word says that God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. You do not need to feel the delight to know it is real. You do not need to feel the joy to know it is yours. Now, you only need to believe the Word. You only need to stop arguing with the truth. You are not a burned out candle. Yet, you are a vessel of the living God. The fire is not gone. The fire is waiting for you to stop blowing on it.
Declare this over yourself
- Elder, hear this: the word says the servant does not abide for ever, but the Son abides for ever. My worth is not in the wax, but in the Holy Spirit who is the true oil. I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, and He does not run out.
- Fear, you are evicted in the name of Jesus. Scripture puts it plainly that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. I am not a used up container, but a son who delights the Father today.
- Father, I receive Your joy now. You have sent forth the Spirit of Your Son into my heart, and I cry Abba. I am Yours, and the written word confirms that I am an heir with Christ.
