There are three hundred people in the hall and he is in the kitchen with his sleeves pushed up.
Somebody's wedding. His side of the family mostly, plus half a village of people who have known him since he was small. The music has got going properly now, the kind that gets the old men up before the young ones, and through the serving hatch he can see his cousins in a ring with their arms in the air and the little ones tearing through the middle of it.
He is washing trays. There are not many trays left, which is a problem, so he has started rinsing the serving spoons one at a time.
His niece comes in with an empty jug, puts it down, lifts the tea towel out of his hands and hangs it over the oven door. She does not say a word about it. She looks at him for a second, smiles, and goes back out to the music.
He stands there.
Then he reaches past the jug, takes the second tea towel off the rail, and starts on the spoons again.
And you know exactly why, because it is your reason too. Out there he would only be somebody at a wedding. In here he is needed. It is easier to be useful to people than to be enjoyed by them, and easiest of all with God, whom you have served since you were young, and who you are quite sure puts up with you, and who you cannot for the life of you believe is glad.

Useful is a much safer thing to be
You carry the chairs. You take the shift nobody else wants. All of that is real love, but it is also the finest hiding place ever invented because nobody asks a working man to sit down and be looked at. You are not a task to be completed. You are a son, and your value does not wait for your hands to be empty. The same Spirit who was given to you rests on that truth, keeping it steady while the world looks for a reason to keep you moving.
You have arranged to stay in His presence only when you have something in your hands. That is not a moral failure; it is a pattern you have built to keep safe. You are not a servant earning your keep. You are a child who belongs in the house. It is written that you received the Spirit of adoption, and that Spirit leads you away from the sink and toward the table where you are already seated.
So let me speak the plainest evidence in the New Testament over you. His pleasure is not a reward for your labor. It is the foundation of your standing. You were predestined to adoption before you lifted a single chair. The promise stands, and it does not depend on your performance. You are accepted in the Beloved, and that acceptance is the ground on which your life is built.
And behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."Matthew 3:17
Look at when that pleasure was first spoken. Before the wilderness, before a single loaf was broken, the Father announced His joy over a Son who had produced nothing yet. The work came afterwards, and it never once had to pay for the love that preceded it. You are called by name, and that call is not a contract. It is a claim. Isaiah 43 says He has called you by your name, you are Mine, and that declaration holds your place before you have done a single thing to earn it.
You are enjoyed by God today, on a day you have produced nothing. That is a fact about Him, not an achievement of yours. You do not need to fix your worth with another hour of labor. He rejoices over you with gladness and quiets you with His love. The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and you may rest in that truth right now, without moving a muscle.
Nobody here is asking you to feel it
This is the part I want to get exactly right, because writing like this usually gets it wrong.
Nothing here asks you to feel delighted in. You may read that verse, and feel precisely nothing, and go and put the kettle on. That does not make it less true of you. Delight is a disposition in God long before it is an experience in anybody, and His disposition does not rise and fall with your ability to detect it this evening.
You have His pleasure whether or not tonight delivers a feeling to go with it. The written word states it as something God is rather than something you collect on a good day, and the Holy Spirit bears witness with your own spirit that you belong to Him, which is work He does under the floorboards and not always in the front room.
What "well pleased" is not saying
Well pleased is not the same as satisfied with your conduct. If it were, it would be a report card in kind handwriting, and you would go straight back to the sink to keep the mark up.
The word is warmer and simpler than that. It is what a face does when somebody it loves comes through a door. No face has ever done that because of a performance. It does it because of who has arrived.
Which leads somewhere a working man does not enjoy hearing at first: your usefulness is not the interesting thing about you to God. He is not short of hands. He has messengers, and He has stones He could raise up if He wanted a job done. What He does not have anywhere else in creation is you, and He is not in the habit of confusing a person with their output.
You were wanted before you were useful, and you were wanted on the days you were no use to a living soul. Scripture says He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, which is a date that comfortably precedes every service you have ever given, and His Spirit calls you a child rather than a worker every single time He speaks about you.
When the kitchen is the only safe room
One more thing plainly, because on some nights the kitchen is not modesty. It is refuge.
If staying busy is the only thing keeping you upright, and if stopping for a minute is frightening because of what arrives in the quiet, then please do not sit with this alone tonight. Tell someone real: a doctor, a pastor, a friend who will stay on the phone. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and anywhere else your local crisis line or emergency services, along with one person near enough to come and be with you while you do it. A minute of stillness is a small thing to ask of a settled heart and a very large thing to ask of a frightened one, and God is not standing over that minute with a stopwatch.
You are held whether the stillness comes easily tonight or does not come at all. The word calls Him the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, and His Spirit was given the name Helper, which is not a decoration on the title.
So set the towel down. Not to prove a point, and not because washing up is beneath a child of God. Set it down for sixty seconds because something is being held out to you that cannot be taken with both hands full.
This is yours right now, at the sink, with your sleeves still wet. The word promised a Father who rejoices over His own with singing, and His Spirit is the one who makes such a thing hearable, so none of it is waiting on a better week out of you.
And you do not have to go out and dance. That was never the ask, and dancing has never been the proof of anything. The ask is a minute, standing exactly where you are, receiving instead of producing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen, with the music going next door. Not in your head. This standing was given to you rather than earned by you, and that is the only reason a sentence out of your mouth carries any weight: an ambassador speaks with his King's authority and never with his own, and he announces only what the King has already said. Moving a mountain takes no great quantity of anything, and a mountain is spoken to rather than reasoned with. Yours is not your usefulness, which is a good thing and can stay exactly where it is. Yours is the settled certainty that God tolerates you. Speak to that one. Scripture is the ground under every word here and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live, and whether the feeling turns up tonight or turns up later in His own way is entirely His to give.
- Stack of trays by the sink, you are work and you are good work, and you were never my ticket in. Scripture has the Father saying His pleasure out loud over His Son before one miracle had been done, and pleasure spoken before the work is pleasure that never depended on it.
- Suspicion that God is only being polite, you do not get the last word on His face. In the name of Jesus I hand you back where you came from, and the Holy Spirit who calls me a child of God is not a Spirit who flatters anybody.
- Lord, You are glad about me tonight and You are not being polite about it. I thank You, because the written word has You saying the pleasure out loud before the working ever started, and I am standing still for one minute now and letting that be true of me too.
