The Shift at Closing Time

This message is for I volunteer at the food bank every Saturday because I am afraid that if I stop being useful I will lose my standing in the congregation

The folding table in the back of the church hall held a stack of plastic crates. They were white and thin, the kind that get brittle after a few washes. Marcus was stacking them. His hands moved in a rhythm that had been set by the clock on the wall. Every Saturday for four years, he had been there at 7:00 AM. He knew the exact number of bags that fit on the pallet. He knew which boxes needed the cardboard reinforcement. He was good at this. He was very good at this.

When the last volunteer left at 1:00 PM, Marcus did not go home. He stayed. He sat on one of the plastic crates he had just stacked. The hall was empty. The silence was heavy. It was not a peaceful silence. It was the silence of a question he could not ask out loud. He looked at the stack of crates. He felt a tightness in his chest that had nothing to do with lifting boxes. He wondered if he had earned his place here. He wondered if the pastor would notice if he missed next week. Still, he wondered if his standing in the room was tied to his hands. He felt like an employee who had worked too many overtime shifts and was waiting to see if the boss would remember his name. He did not know how to stop. He did not know how to be off duty in a house where he had served for so long.

You Are Not a Pattern

You are not a transaction. Your value is not a wage earned by your labor. The lie that says you must keep giving to keep belonging is false. Your seat at the table is not a rental. It is a gift. You are not a worker on a payroll. You are a child in the house. This is settled.

You are not a pattern of performance. You are a child of the King. Your place here is a birth, not a post. Ephesians 1:13 says you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. That seal does not fade when you rest. It does not dim when you are tired. You are not waiting for a review. You are family, and family does not get fired for sleeping.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. This is not a legal document you must renew. It is a mark of ownership. Romans 8:15 says you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom you cry, Abba, Father. This call is not praise for your work ethic. It is the declaration of your identity. You belong because you were bought, not because you are useful. Your standing is secured by a covenant, not by a clock.

Let the tightness in your chest loosen. The fear that you will lose your place is gone. You are not an employee. You are a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister. The door is open because you are loved. 1 John 3:1 says behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us. Love does not keep a ledger of your hours. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now.

"As many as received him, to him gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."John 1:12
The breakthrough

Look at your hands. Look at the work you have done. It is good. It is honorable. It is a gift. But it is not your anchor. The work is a fruit. You are the tree. A tree does not earn its roots by producing apples. It produces apples because it is rooted. If you stop for a season, the tree does not die. The tree rests. The roots go deeper in the dark. The Spirit confirms it beside you now.

You are standing in a doorway right now. On one side is the old way, where your identity is built on your output. It is exhausting. It is fragile. It is a house built on sand. On the other side is the truth. The truth is that you have been given the power to become a child of God (John 1:12). This power is not a reward for service. It is a gift for belief. It is yours. It is settled. It is not up for review.

You are not a pattern of performance. You are a beloved child. The Holy Spirit is not keeping score. He is keeping you. He is the seal on your covenant. You do not have to prove your belonging. You only have to rest in it. The fear that you will lose your standing is the fear of a servant. You are not a servant. You are family. And family does not need to prove their love. It just needs to be there. Christ has settled that standing in the Word.

Declare this over yourself

  1. The folding table and the stack of crates have no authority over my standing in this house. I am not an employee waiting for a review, because my place here is a birth and not a post. The blood of Jesus has already paid the price of my belonging, and I rest in that finished work today.
  2. Fear, you have no right to live in my chest as the keeper of my identity. I evict you in the name of Jesus, because the Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God. I fill this room with the truth that my worth is settled by covenant, not by my output or my usefulness.
  3. Father, I receive my identity as family and not as staff right now. I am choosing to rest in the truth that Scripture says I am predestined to adoption as sons. I am safe in Your house, and I am stopping my striving because I am loved.
