You Are Not the Budget

This message is for I keep waiting for the church to ask me to lead a ministry because I am afraid that if they do not need me they will stop loving me

The church office was locked. It was always locked after five on a Friday. Sarah knew this because she had been the one to lock it for the last six years. She stood on the sidewalk holding a box of her own things. A stack of old bulletins sat on top. A red binder held the budget. Still, a mug said "Pray Harder." The streetlamp buzzed above her. She did not move.

She was not tired from the work. She was tired from the waiting. For six years she had answered the phone. She balanced the books. She planned the youth trips. She did it well. But every time she walked into that room, a tight knot formed in her chest. She wondered if they would notice if she was gone. She wondered if her love for them was only useful because it was convenient. She looked at the building. It looked like a cage. She wanted to walk away, but her feet did not move. She was afraid that if she left, she would be no one.

The Door Is Not a Payroll

You are standing in the hallway. You are looking for a job description that does not exist. And, you have built your life around being needed. You have made your identity out of your utility. You think that if you stop producing, you stop mattering. That is the lie that keeps the knot in your chest.

You are a child to be known. This is the truth that breaks the knot. The Holy Spirit has already written your name in the book of life. That name is not a line item in a budget. It is not a role you fill for a season. It is a birthright. When Jesus came into the world, He did not come to hire employees. He came to find lost sheep. He did not look for workers who could justify their wages. He looked for hearts that were broken and lonely. He saw you before you had anything to offer. Now, he saw you in your weakness, and He called you good.

You are not a pattern of your past performance. You are a living person in the hands of the Father. The Holy Spirit dwells in you as a seal of ownership. It is not a contract of labor. This means your standing does not change when your schedule does. It does not change when the ministry closes. It does not change when you are old and cannot lift the boxes anymore. You are held by a love that does not require your output to remain.

"As many as received him, to him he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
The breakthrough

You are looking at the church building right now. Or maybe it is a different room. Maybe it is your family. Maybe it is your small group. You are afraid that they will stop loving you if you stop being useful. That fear is a lie. It is a heavy stone that you have been carrying for years. You do not have to carry it any longer. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now, for His word says that you are no longer a servant but a son.

Your value was settled on the cross. It was not determined by your productivity. It was not determined by your ability to lead a ministry. It was determined by the blood of Jesus Christ. You have the right to be a child. That right is permanent. It is not up for review. It is not contingent on your performance. You are free to stop serving and still be loved. You are free to rest and still be valued. Still, you are free to be a person, not a post.

The Holy Spirit is in you right now. He is reminding you of this truth. He is not asking you to do more. He is asking you to believe what is already done. You are not a staff member who can be let go. You are a family member who belongs. And, you are safe. You are known. You are loved. Scripture gives that sentence its footing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. That locked office door does not get to define my standing in this house. John 1:12 says I was given the right to become a child of God, and that right is a birth and not a post. My place here is settled by blood and not by a budget, and it does not come up for review.
  2. Fear that I am only loved when I am useful, get out of my heart. In the name of Jesus, I evict the belief that my value is a line item to be managed. I am a family member who belongs, and my worth is not contingent on my output.
  3. Father, I rest in the truth that You knew me before I had anything to offer. I am laying down the heavy stone of performance and receiving the freedom of my birthright. I am home in Your house, and I am loved for who I am.
