The fluorescent lights in the church office hum at a frequency David knows well. He sits at the long metal table. The legs wobble, so he slides a piece of cardboard under them. A stack of event flyers sits on the surface. The ink is sharp and black. David is not tired in his body. He is tired in his bones. He just finished calling the caterer. He negotiated the price. He confirmed the seating chart. Still, he emailed the volunteer team. Now the silence settles in. His knees hurt. The pain is a dull grind. It flares when he stands. He wants to ask Pastor Mark for prayer. He wants to say, "Brother, I am in pain." But the words die in his throat. Instead, he thinks about the next event. He thinks about the new chairs needed. He thinks about leading the furniture committee. He does not want to pray for chairs. He wants God to heal his knees. And, he cannot separate the two. In his mind, prayer is a transaction. If he asks for healing, he must pay with labor. If he asks for mercy, he must pay with service. He is so used to being useful. He has forgotten how to be held. He is so used to being a hand. He has forgotten he has a heart. Now, he looks at the flyers and sees a wall. He looks at his knees and sees a debt. He does not know he is free. He does not know the door is open. He does not know he does not have to earn his place. Yet, he sits in a house full of love. He treats it like a job site. He waits for a paycheck paid two thousand years ago. He waits for a rest that is already his. He holds his breath for everyone else.
The Birthright is Not a Paycheck
The door is wide open and light spills onto the street. The seat was reserved by blood. The meal was prepared by grace. The place was given by birth. Access to the Father's care does not feel like something to earn. Value does not feel tied to utility. Pain feels like a problem to manage rather than a cry to be heard. The house feels like a workplace. The Father feels like a boss. So the work continues. The serving continues. The giving continues. And the starving continues. The hurting continues. The waiting continues. It looks like doing everything right. It is missing the point. The point is not that the service is too little. The point is that the service is for the wrong reason. The service is to get in. The service is to be loved. The service is to be forgiven. The service is to be healed. It is written that as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God. The Holy Spirit bears witness with the spirit that this child is of God. This is not a servant who abides forever. This is a Son who abides forever.
You are not an employee of the house. You are a son or a daughter. This is not a job you apply for. This is a life you are given. The Holy Spirit placed you here to pour out His love. He does not wait for you to finish tasks. He does not wait for you to clear the table. He does not wait for you to earn your place. He is here now. He is with you now. He is speaking to you now. Galatians 4:6 says God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts. That Spirit cries out, Abba, Father. You are no longer a servant but a son. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. You are accepted in the Beloved. You have boldness and access with confidence. You come boldly to the throne of grace. You do not knock. You enter.
"But as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."John 1:12
The word received in John 1:12 is active. It means to take in. It means to embrace. It is the word for a mother taking a newborn. It is the word for a traveler taking shelter. In that moment, power was given. Authority was given. The right to become a child was given. It was not a hiring. It was a birth. It was not a contract. It was an adoption. It was not a payment. It was a love. This is the legal ground. It is not based on performance. It is not based on productivity. It is not based on utility. It is based on birth. A child does not work to eat. A child does not work to be loved. A child does not work to be held. A child only has to know who they are. Ephesians 1:5 says He predestined us to adoption as sons. That adoption is settled. The inheritance is not earned. The inheritance is received.
You are not a pattern of performance. You are a person of presence. The Holy Spirit is not looking at your resume. He is looking at your face. He is not counting your hours. He is counting your breaths. He is not measuring your output. He is measuring your heart. He sees the pain in your knees. He sees the exhaustion in your eyes. He sees the silence in your soul. He is not angry with you for it. He is not disappointed in you for it. He is not waiting for you to fix it before He loves you. He loves you in the middle of it. He loves you in the middle of the pain. He loves you in the middle of the struggle. His love is not conditional on usefulness. His love is unconditional on your existence. It is written that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. You are led by the Spirit of God. You are the sons of God. You do not perform to be seen. You are seen to be loved.
Grace is not a loan. Grace is a gift. A gift does not come with a bill. A gift does not come with a condition. A gift does not come with a price tag. It is free. It is finished. It is done. The ledger is not kept by the Spirit. The books are not balanced by the Spirit. The repayment is not waited for by the Spirit. The promise stands. He rejoices with gladness and quiets with His love. He has called by name. You are a gift to be received. You are not a debt to be paid. The Holy Spirit is not keeping a ledger of service. He is not balancing books. He is not waiting for repayment for His grace. You do not have to earn it. You do not have to maintain it. You do not have to protect it. You only have to receive it. You only have to say yes to it. You only have to let it in.
You are not a worker in the field. You are a branch on the vine. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to produce fruit to keep the vine alive. He is asking you to stay connected. Connection is the goal. Fruit is the result. His word says that apart from Him you can do nothing, yet in Him you abide. You are not trying to impress the gardener. You are trying to stay rooted in the soil. You are not trying to outgrow other branches. You are trying to grow in the light. You are not trying to prove your worth. You are trying to express your life. The life of Jesus is in you. The same Spirit who dwells in you is the source of that life. That life is not a task. That life is a treasure. That life is a river. And that river is flowing to you right now. I will not leave you orphans. You are held. You are known. You are loved.
Look at your knees. Look at the pain. Still, look at the flyers. Look at the work. You have been carrying these things because you thought they were the price of admission. You thought if you stopped carrying them, you would be cast out. And, you thought if you stopped working, you would be discarded. You thought if you stopped serving, you would be forgotten. But that is not true. The truth is that you were never cast out. The truth is that you were never discarded. The truth is that you were never forgotten. You were always held. You were always loved. Now, you were always seen. The pain in your knees is not a penalty. It is a place where grace is waiting to enter. The work you do is not a payment. It is an expression of the love already in you. The flyers are not a chain. They are a canvas for the art of your life. You do not have to trade your pain for access. You do not have to trade your service for love. Yet, you do not have to trade your labor for peace. You are already in. You are already loved. Still, you are already held. The door is open. The table is set. The place is yours. You do not have to earn it. You do not have to buy it. And, you do not have to work for it. You only have to sit down. You only have to rest. Now, you only have to receive. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to finish. He is waiting for you to begin. He is waiting for you to stop. He is waiting for you to breathe. He is waiting for you to trust. Yet, he is waiting for you to know. He is waiting for you to be. He is waiting for you to be home. Scripture gives that sentence its footing.
Declare this over yourself
- The stack of flyers on the table has no claim on my soul, for His word says I received the power to become a son, and the Holy Spirit confirms my seat is a birthright. I am not an employee waiting for a paycheck, but a child who has already inherited the house. The work is mine to do with joy, not to pay for my place.
- Usefulness, get out of my heart in the name of Jesus, and let the truth that I am loved for who I am fill the space you leave behind. My standing is not a post I must maintain, but a family name I carry, sealed by the Spirit. I am resting in the love that requires no invoice.
- Father, I thank You that You see my face and not my resume, and I am sitting down at the table You have set for me right now. The written word promises I am accepted in the Beloved, and I am receiving my place as family. I am letting go of the need to earn it.
