The phone lit up on the kitchen counter. It was 7:14 PM. The house was quiet, except for the hum of the refrigerator and the tick of the clock on the wall. You stared at the screen. Your mother's name. Your thumb hovered over the glass. You knew what was coming before you even picked it up. It was always the same. A request wrapped in a question. A task wrapped in a worry. You picked it up. "Hi, Mom." Her voice came through, thin and quick. She did not ask how you were. She did not ask about your day. She went straight to the point. The Easter decorations were not finished. The living room looked bare. She needed you to come over tomorrow. She needed your hands. She needed your eyes. She needed you to fix the thing that was broken in her heart by making the room look right.
You felt the spike in your chest. It was a sharp, hot pinprick. It was the fear of being the bad daughter. The fear of being ungrateful. The fear that if you said no, she would stop seeing you. So you said yes. You said it before you finished thinking. You said it while your stomach was tightening. Still, you said it because the silence after a "no" was too loud to bear. You hung up. You sat in the dark kitchen. And, you did not move for ten minutes. You were not angry at her. You were angry at yourself. Now, you felt like a tool. You felt like a staff member who had just been handed a new ticket. You had worked for God since you were nineteen. Yet, you had managed teams. You had organized events. You had carried the weight of other people's feelings on your back until your spine bent. Still, you had made "yes" your identity. You had made availability your worth. And now, in the quiet of your own home, you realized you did not know how to be off duty. You did not know who you were when you were not fixing, managing, or soothing. You were terrified she would think you were ungrateful. But the truth was deeper. You were terrified you were nothing if you were not useful.
You Are Not a Staff Member
There is a difference between a son and an employee. An employee works for a paycheck. A son lives in the house. This is not a new idea. It is the oldest truth in Scripture. When Jesus walked the earth, He did not treat the people around Him like a committee. He did not ask for their availability. He did not check their calendars. He spoke to them as family. He spoke to them as those who had been born again. And, he gave them a new position. It was not a position they earned. It was not a position they could lose by failing to show up to a meeting. It was a position given by birth.
You are a child of the King, right now, in this moment. This is not a future hope. It is your current standing. Isaiah writes that He has called you by your name, you are Mine. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that declaration breathe life into your bones. The Spirit is not a distant force. The Spirit is the breath of the Father, and that breath is in you. You are not an employee who has been overworked. You are a son who has been loved. That love does not depend on your availability. That love does not depend on your labor. That love is the climate, and your feelings are just the weather passing through.
The weather is loud. The fear of being ungrateful is a storm. It howls in your ears. It tells you that if you do not do the task, you are not good. It tells you that your mother's disappointment is your failure. But the climate does not change with the weather. The climate is the love of God. That love is settled. It is finished. It is done. You do not have to fight the storm to prove you belong. You just have to stand in the house. Now, you just have to let the roof cover you. You just have to stop trying to hold up the ceiling with your hands.
You are known by the Father, right now, as you read this. He is not looking at your to-do list. He is not looking at your productivity report. He is looking at you. Ephesians 1:13 says you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. The Spirit is the witness within you. The Spirit is the seal. You are not trying to earn a seal. You already have one. It is not ink. It is life. It is the breath of God. And that breath does not stop when you stop working. That breath does not pause when you say no. That breath is constant. It is steady. It is sure.
The fear you feel is real. It is not a lie. It is a wound. It is a wound that says, "I am only loved when I am useful." That wound is not your identity. That wound is a story you were told. And stories can be rewritten. The Holy Spirit is the writer. He is not editing you. He is healing you. He is taking the wound and closing it. He is taking the fear and replacing it with peace. You do not have to do this work. You do not have to fix the wound. Yet, you just have to let the Healer work. You just have to let the Spirit do what the Spirit does.
You are not an employee who is waiting for a review. Still, you are a child who is waiting for a hug. You have been living in the office. You have been living in the break room. And, you have been living in the hallway. But you belong in the living room. You belong on the couch. You belong in the light. Now, you belong in the warmth. You belong in the house. Ephesians 2:19 declares you are fellow citizens and members of the household of God. The same Spirit who was given to you marks this home as yours.
You are not a staff member, right now, as you sit in this quiet. Yet, you are a son. Galatians 4:7 says therefore you are no longer a servant but a son. The Holy Spirit is the one who confirms it in your spirit. The Spirit is not a suggestion. The Spirit is a reality. The Spirit is the fact of your adoption. You are not adopted by your performance. You are adopted by your birth. And that birth happened. It is not pending. It is not conditional. It is done.
The fear of being ungrateful is a lie. It is a lie that says your love must be proven by your labor. But your love is proven by your presence. Your love is proven by your being. You do not have to do anything to prove you love your mother. You do not have to do anything to prove you love your Father. Still, you just have to be there. You just have to be still. You just have to rest.
For as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.John 1:12
You are holding the phone. You are looking at the screen. Now, you are ready to say yes. But you do not have to. You can say no. You can say, "I love you, Mom. I cannot do it this week." You can say it and let the silence sit. You can say it and not fix the silence. You can say it and trust that your mother's love is bigger than your availability. Yet, you can say it and trust that your Father's love is bigger than your performance, for the Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and His word says you are no longer a servant but a son.
It is not about the decorations. It is about your standing. It is about who you are when you are not doing. It is about the truth that you are a child. You are not an employee. You are not a staff member. Still, you are a son. You are a daughter. You are born again. And, you are received. You are loved. And that love is not up for review. That love is not conditional. That love is not dependent on your labor. That love is finished. That love is done.
You are not an employee who is waiting for a paycheck. You are a child who is waiting for a hug. Now, you are not a staff member who is waiting for a task. You are a son who is waiting for rest. You are not a servant who is waiting for approval. Yet, you are a daughter who is waiting for peace. And that peace is here. It is in you. It is the Holy Spirit. It is the breath of God. It is the love of the Father. Still, it is the truth of John 1:12. You are born of God. You are not born of blood. And, you are not born of the will of the flesh. You are not born of the will of man. You are born of God. And that birth is your identity. That birth is your security. That birth is your rest.
Declare this over yourself
- Easter decorations, you do not get to decide my worth. John 1:12 says I was born of God, not of the will of the flesh, so my place in this house is a birth and not a post that comes up for review. I am resting in the living room as a child, because my standing is settled by my Father and does not depend on my hands.
- Fear that I am nothing if I am not useful, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. You are evicted by the truth that I am a son who has been loved, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to that love while you are only the weather passing through. Peace, you belong here now, and I am letting you fill the room where you used to sit.
- Father, You are the God who sees me, and I am not carrying what has already been carried. I am taking off the coat of the staff member and standing in the warmth of the living room, because Scripture puts it plainly that I am enough without my work. I am receiving the breath of the Spirit right now, and that breath is my constant life.
