Coming In At Hallowed

This message is for the first word of the prayer everybody says together goes past you and nothing in you moves, and you have started reading that flatness as a report on where you stand

Two hundred people in a hall with a low ceiling, and the man at the front says, "Let's say it together."

And the room does that thing a room does. Everybody breathes in at the same moment. Chairs creak. Somebody's toddler is doing a running commentary in the third row and nobody minds. Two hundred voices go up together on the first word, and it is the warmest sound in the whole week, and it is the sound of people who mean it.

Marisol comes in on the second word.

Not on purpose. She is not making a point. She has her hands in her lap and her eyes open and she is entirely willing, and the first word simply goes past her the way a train goes past a station it does not stop at. Then her voice arrives, on time, in tune, at hallowed, and she says the rest of it with everybody else and means every syllable of it.

She used to interrogate herself about this on the way home. What is wrong with me. Why does that word land like a flat stone. Everybody in that room has something in their chest when they say it and I have weather that never arrives. She does not interrogate herself any more. Now she just comes in at hallowed and gets on with her Sunday, and there is a small, quiet, unexamined file in the back of her mind that says: whatever this is that they have, it is theirs, and I am here on a visitor's pass.

You know that second where the room says a word and you do not.

And I want to say something plainly before we go one more line. This message is not going to go digging for the reason. Your history is yours, it is not mine to open on a page, and nothing here is going to put anybody on trial or tell you what happened to you. We are not doing that. We are doing something much smaller and much better: we are going to look at where the record of your standing is actually kept, and it is not kept in your throat.

Coming In At Hallowed

The record is not kept in your throat

Paul is writing to people in Rome who are frightened of slipping back into a fear they only just got out of, and in the middle of it he does something legal. You are standing on ground that was settled before you arrived. It is already settled that you belong to the Father, and that standing does not waver because your voice is quiet today.

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.Romans 8:16

Bears witness with. Two signatures on one document, and the first one is not yours. You have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, and that seal is the mark of an heir, not a probationary employee. The Spirit who was given to you has already written His name on your record.

That is not a poetic flourish, it is courtroom language, and Paul chose it on purpose. A witness is somebody who stands up and states what is the case, whether or not the person it concerns is having a good week. You are a son of God, and the same Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are His child. His signature does not thin out on a Sunday when yours goes quiet.

So hear this over you, right where you are sitting. You are a child of God, and the statement is attested by the Spirit Himself rather than by anything you managed to feel in that hall. Romans 8:16 puts the witness on His side of the page, and the same Spirit is doing the witnessing now, in you, in the flat spot, on the word that will not come.

And notice what Paul does not say. He does not say the Spirit bears witness with our warmth. He does not say the Spirit bears witness with our vocabulary. He says with our spirit, which is the deepest and quietest thing in a person. You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, and that part of you has been saying yes to God for years while your feelings were off doing something else entirely.

The right was granted, and rights do not fluctuate

Here is the second thing, and it comes from John, who liked to say enormous things in short sentences.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.John 1:12

He gave the right. That is a grant. It is the kind of word you find on a document rather than in a diary, and the whole point of a grant is that it holds on the days the recipient is not thinking about it.

You have been given that right, and it did not come with a required vocabulary list attached. What the word says is that the right was given rather than achieved, and the Holy Spirit is the One holding it in force this morning while you come in at hallowed and mean the rest of it.

Now watch what that does to the flat spot. If your standing rested on the feeling, then a flat morning would be a demotion, and you would be right to worry about it. But the standing rests on a grant and a witness, both of them on His side, and a flat morning is therefore weather. Real weather. Weather you did not order and cannot dismiss. And still weather, over a house whose deeds are somewhere else entirely.

A name you can actually say

Scripture does not hand anybody a single approved word and dare them to produce it.

It hands you a whole shelf. The Lord. The God who sees. The Rock. The Shepherd. Redeemer. The One who called you by name and said, you are Mine. Every one of those is His own self description, put there by the Holy Spirit, and not one of them is a downgrade or a workaround.

So use the one your mouth can make today. That is not a compromise and it is not a lesser prayer. You are speaking to the same God under a name He gave Himself, and the word says He answers to all of them, and His Spirit is the One carrying your sentence up whichever door it goes in by.

And one more thing, said plainly and then left alone. If what sits behind that word is something that is still actively hurting you, then a real human being, a counselor, a doctor, somebody with a name and a chair and time in the diary, is part of what God is doing for you rather than a detour from it. I am not going to try to be that person from a page, and I am not going to pretend an article is enough. Get the help. It belongs in this story.

The breakthrough

So stop grading yourself in that half second.

The gap between the first word and hallowed is not a report on your standing, it is not a verdict, and it is not a visitor's pass. It is a half second in which two hundred people said something and you did not, and the document did not so much as flicker.

You are inside the household, and the witness to it is the Holy Spirit rather than a feeling you have been trying to summon since you were young. Romans 8:16 is what says so, plainly, in the plainest legal sentence Paul owns, and the Spirit is still signing it in you this morning while the toddler talks through the whole thing in the third row.

Say it once, in the name you can say. That is what today asks and it is not asking for more.

Declare this over yourself

The standing under these lines is yours already, granted rather than felt into being, and Romans 8:16 is what it rests on rather than the temperature of your Sunday morning. However He answers about the feeling, and whenever, the words stay true: they are His word, the power in them is the Holy Spirit, and no emotion is being asked of you to make them work.

  1. Flat place in me where that word lands, you are not the register my standing is kept in. Scripture keeps the record in a witness God gave rather than in anything I can produce at eleven o'clock on a Sunday, so you may stay exactly as flat as you are and change nothing at all. I am coming in at the next line, and I belong in this room.
  2. Conclusion that I am here on a visitor's pass, you have been quietly filing me at the back of my own house. In the name of Jesus you do not get to read my silence as an answer. The Spirit Himself is the witness the word names, and His signature does not fade on the mornings mine goes quiet.
  3. Lord, You are a name my mouth can make this morning, and You have never once required a different one from me. Your word says Your Spirit bears witness with mine that I am Your child, and Your Spirit is doing exactly that in this hall whether or not anything in me moves. So I am saying it out loud in the name I have got, and I am saying it once.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
