The Standing That Holds

The kitchen table was cold. Maya sat with her elbows on the surface, a math worksheet open but untouched, her eyes fixed on a spot on the linoleum three feet to the left. Her mother, Sarah, stood by the sink, holding a mug that had gone lukewarm twenty minutes ago. The air in the room was thick with the specific silence of a question that has already been asked and answered in a way that broke something.

Maya spoke without looking up. "When you say Father, I hear the sound of the door closing."

Sarah froze. The mug trembled in her hand. She wanted to say, "That is not true, God is not him." She wanted to say, "God is different." But the words felt like ash in her mouth. To explain the difference felt like a lie. To defend the title felt like an attack on her daughter's pain. So Sarah said nothing. She just stood there, feeling the ground drop out from under her feet, carrying a faith she had built her whole life on, and finding no words that did not taste like a defense of the very thing that hurt her child.

The silence stretched. It was not empty. It was heavy with the weight of a daughter who needed to be believed, and a mother who was terrified that the foundation of her own soul was too fragile to hold this specific weight.

The Standing That Holds

The pattern of the past does not hold the present. It is a map of where the road has been, not a decree for where the spirit must remain. When the dust settles and the noise of old memories fades, a different voice begins to speak. It does not argue with the history. It simply speaks over it, establishing a new ground beneath the feet that have known only wandering.

The Holy Spirit writes a new story over the old one, and the Word in John 1:12 says that to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. This is not a polite metaphor. This is a legal standing. It is a shift in citizenship. When Maya hears the word Father, she hears a human man who left. That is a true story about a human man. But it is not the true story about God. The God who made the stars and set the tides is not a person who can walk out on a promise. He is the One who cannot lie. He is the One whose character is unchanging. Your standing with Him is not built on your performance, nor on your father's failure, nor on your ability to feel a warm glow when you say the name. It is built on His nature.

You have a right that cannot be revoked, written by the finger of the Almighty and sealed by the breath of the Holy Spirit. This is not a status that fluctuates with the weather of the heart. It is a fixed point in the cosmos, anchored in the written promise and sustained by the living presence that dwells within. It stands firm while the world shifts.

The Spirit confirms this right within you, sealing you with the promised Holy Spirit, as Ephesians 1:13-14 tells us, which is a down payment, a guarantee that what God has started, He will finish. This right is not earned by feeling. It is not earned by understanding. It is not earned by having a father who stayed. It is given. It is received. And because it is given by the Creator, it does not depend on the creature. If your feeling says, "I am not a child because I do not feel loved," that feeling is lying. If your memory says, "I am not a child because a man named father left," that memory is true about the man, but it is a lie about God. You are a child of God. That is a fact. It is a fact that exists whether you feel it or not. It is a fact that exists whether you can explain it or not.

You are held by a promise that does not shift, a covenant secured by the blood of Jesus and guarded by the constant watchfulness of the Holy Spirit. The written word stands as the foundation, and the Spirit acts as the living breath that keeps that foundation warm and active. It is a hold that does not let go, even when the hands of the world try to pull the threads apart.

The Spirit reminds you of all that Jesus has said, as Jesus promised in John 14:26, that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. This means you do not have to carry the weight of the explanation alone. You do not have to have the perfect answer. You do not have to defend God against a teenage mind that is processing grief. Still, you have the Spirit. He is the one who breathes the truth into your heart. He is the one who gives you the words when you are ready to speak them. You are not alone in this kitchen. You are not alone in this silence. And, you are accompanied by the One who speaks life into dead situations.

Silence is not a failure of faith. It is a space where the soul processes the weight of the moment. The human heart often needs time to integrate the shock of a new truth. In that quiet, the spirit is not empty. It is waiting. It is listening. The absence of words does not mean the absence of truth. It means the truth is settling into the bones, making room for a response that is not just spoken, but lived.

The Spirit gives a spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, as 2 Timothy 1:7 declares, not a spirit of cowardice. This means your silence is not weakness. It is not a lack of faith. It is not a sign that you have abandoned your child. It is a human response to a painful moment. You are allowed to be human. You are allowed to be stunned. Now, you are allowed to not have the words. The Spirit does not require you to be eloquent. He requires you to be present. He is present with you in that stunned silence. He is breathing in the space where the words failed. He is holding the line of truth even when your voice cannot. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now.

You are safe in the name you choose, a safety that is not contingent on the comfort of the word but on the character of the One who is named. The written scripture establishes the relationship, and the Holy Spirit confirms that relationship in the deepest part of the being. No single word can capture the fullness of the Person, but the Person is present regardless of the label used.

The Spirit leads you into all truth, as Jesus said in John 16:13, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. This means you are not trapped by the word "Father" if that word is a source of pain. You are free to use the names that bring you into God's presence. You can call Him Abba, if that word feels like a home. Yet, you can call Him God, if that word feels like a rock. You can call Him Lord, if that word feels like a king. You can call Him Jesus, if that name feels like a friend. The name is not the essence. The essence is the Person. The standing is not in the word; the standing is in the relationship. You are safe. You are held. Still, you are known. And that safety does not depend on your daughter's belief in this moment. It depends on God's faithfulness, which is constant.
