The clock on the wall ticks every second. It is a loud, plastic sound. You sit in a plastic chair that does not support your lower back. The coffee in your hand has been cold for forty minutes. You hold it for warmth, not for drinking. The door at the end of the hallway is closed. Your friend is behind it. The room is quiet except for the hum of the vending machine and the tick of the clock.
Your phone sits in your lap. No new messages. You put it face down on the armrest. You pick it up again. Still, you put it down. The boredom is heavy. It sits on your chest like a wet towel. A sharp spike of guilt hits. Your eyelids are heavy. Your feet hurt. But your friend is in surgery. They are fighting for their life, or their health, or their future. And you are here, bored. You are here, tired. You are here, waiting.
A voice in your head whispers that you should be praying harder. It says you should be on your knees. It says you should be weeping. It says you should be burning with intensity. If you are bored, you must not care enough. If you are tired, you must not love enough. You start to rehearse prayers in your head. You try to force the words. They feel empty. They feel like dust. You hate yourself for feeling empty. You hate the boredom. And, you hate the fatigue. You feel like you are failing them. You feel like you are failing God.
Then, something shifts. Not in the room. In you.
You look at the coffee cup again. It is just a cup. It is not a symbol of your failure. It is a cup. You look at your hands. They are resting in your lap. They are not clenched. They are just hands. You take a breath. It goes deep into your lungs. You let it out. The tick of the clock continues. The door remains closed. But the weight on your chest lifts an inch. You realize you are still here. You are still present. And that is enough.
You Are Allowed to Wait
The guilt that settles in the chest is a cultural habit, not a spiritual signal. It whispers that faith is constant motion, that stillness is disbelief. This narrative turns rest into sin. The written word declares you are no longer a servant but a son, and the Holy Spirit confirms this standing in your heart. You are not a slave to performance.
The body has limits. The mind has limits. These are not flaws in the faith. They are the design of humanity. God made a body that needs rest. He made a mind that needs space. When a person sits in a waiting room, tired and bored, they honor the vessel He gave them. The Holy Spirit of promise seals this life, and that same Spirit sustains the finite form.
Consider Jesus in the boat. The disciples were exhausted. They had fished all night and caught nothing. They were tired, frustrated, and hungry. Jesus did not scold them for being tired. He did not demand they keep rowing. He allowed them to sleep. When the storm came, He did not use their fatigue against them. He used their rest as the ground for His miracle. Tiredness is not an obstacle to His work. It is the context in which He meets them.
The Holy Spirit does not measure worth by productivity. He has promised to care for you, not because you can perform, but because you are His. You are safe in His care right now. The written word assures you that He carries your anxiety. You do not need to carry it for Him.
Many believe God is impressed by suffering. They think that if they look strong, He will give them more. This is the opposite of truth. God is not impressed by endurance. He is moved by honesty. He is drawn to weakness. When a person admits they are bored, they are being honest. When they admit they are tired, they are being honest. Honesty is the door through which grace enters. Boredom does not need to be dressed up. It can be brought to Him as it is.
The Holy Spirit dwells within as a comforter, not a taskmaster. The written word says He makes you lie down in green pastures. This is a place of rest, not a place of work. You are at rest in His presence right now. The Spirit who was given to you guards this peace.
The waiting room is a sacred space. It is a place where nothing has to be done. It is a place where no one is required to produce. It is a place where one can simply be. This is rare in a world of constant doing. In the waiting room, presence is enough. A friend does not need a saint. They need the one who holds the cold coffee and watches the clock and stays.
The Holy Spirit confirms your identity as a child of God. To those who received Him, He gave the right to become children of God. This status is held, not earned. You are a child of God right now. The Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are His.
To as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.John 1:12
You are sitting in that chair right now. You are holding that cold coffee. Yet, you are feeling that guilt. And you are wondering if you are allowed to be here. You are wondering if you are allowed to be tired. You are wondering if you are allowed to be bored. Scripture stands beneath that truth. The Holy Spirit bears witness to it now.
The answer is yes.
God is not watching you to see if you are performing well enough. He is watching you to see if you are trusting Him enough. And you are. You are trusting Him by being here. You are trusting Him by staying. Still, you are trusting Him by resting. What God has written is clear: the Spirit Himself bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God.
This is your moment. Not a moment of intensity. Not a moment of prayer. A moment of presence. A moment of being. You do not need to do anything. You do not need to say anything. And, you just need to be. And in that being, you are connected to your friend. You are connected to God. You are connected to yourself. Scripture gives that sentence its footing.
The Holy Spirit settles you into your inheritance right now. You are not waiting to be shown in. You are already in. Now, you are home.
Declare this over yourself
- This waiting room is my home, not a holding cell, because the peace of God guards my heart here. The Holy Spirit, who leads me, has made this place my dwelling, so I do not have to earn my seat with intensity. My access is settled now, and I am not waiting to be shown in.
- Guilt, you have no authority over my presence, because Scripture puts it plainly that I am a child of God by right, not by performance. I evict the lie that I must suffer to be loved, in the name of Jesus, and I fill this space with the rest He has already purchased. My tiredness is not a failure; it is the context in which He meets me.
- Father, I am resting in Your care right now, and my hand is on my chest feeling the life You have given me. I trust You with my friend, and I trust You with my own soul, because the written word says I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. I am here, I am enough, and I am home.
