The kitchen light hums. It is a low, electric buzz that sits right behind the left ear. You are holding a mug of tea that has gone cold because you stopped caring about the temperature ten minutes ago. In your other hand, you hold a Bible. The page is open. The verse is about peace. You read the word peace. You look down at your chest. There is a knot there. It is tight. It is heavy. It has been there since Tuesday. You read the word again. The knot does not move. A thought forms in your mind, sharp and cold. If the peace were real, I would feel it. Since I do not feel it, it is not there. I must not believe enough. You close the book. The knot remains. You sit in the chair, and the silence of the room feels like an accusation. You are waiting for a change in the air pressure. Still, you are waiting for a surge of warmth to wash over you. It does not come. The knot stays. You begin to believe that your inability to feel the peace is the final proof that you do not have it.
The difference between the weather and the sky
Stop looking at your chest for the evidence of your standing. Your feelings are the thermometer; they measure the air, not the sun. The sun is up whether the thermometer reads fifty or ninety. Your biology is a servant, not a master. It reacts to sleep, sugar, and stress. It is not a reliable witness to your spiritual position. The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and the written word stands firm regardless of how your body feels.
You are a child of God, right now, in this exact moment of tightness. This is not a hope for the future. It is the fact of your present. The Holy Spirit has sealed this truth into your spirit, and that seal does not break when your chest feels tight. You are a person with a position. The position is secure. The feelings are just the weather passing through the sky of your life. The sky is the permanent structure. The weather comes and goes. The sky remains. You are anchored in the sky, not the storm.
"As many as received him, to him gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."John 1:12
The text of John 1:12 does not say that you became a son of God when you started feeling good. It does not say that your sonship is contingent on your emotional stability. It says that you received Him. The word receive is a key. You took Him. You accepted Him. And the result was that He gave you power. The power to become. The power to be. That becoming is a legal fact. It is a spiritual birth. A baby does not have to feel like a baby to be one. You are born of God. That is the fact. The tightness in your chest is a sensation in your body, not a verdict on that fact.
You are held by the Father, even when your hands are shaking. This is the truth that the Holy Spirit speaks to your spirit, independent of your mood. He is the one who testifies with your spirit that you are God's children. He does not testify based on your performance. He testifies based on His promise. He is the deposit. He is the guarantee. When the bank is solid, the check is good, even if you are afraid to cash it. The Holy Spirit is the deposit that proves the check is valid. He is in you. He is for you. He is working now. He is interceding now. He is holding the truth now.
The tightness in your chest is real. I am not asking you to pretend it is not there. I am asking you to stop letting it have the final word. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It is a clue, not a conclusion. You are being ministered to, right now, by the Word and by the Spirit. You are not alone in this room. You are not alone in this chest. The God who made the stars is interested in the knot in your chest. He is not annoyed by it. He is not judging it. He is working through it. He is using it to draw you closer to the truth that you are more than your feelings. You are a new creation. The old things are passing away. The tightness is part of the old things. It is dying. It is losing its power. You are not stuck in it. You are passing through it.
You are secure in your standing, and that standing is not based on your pulse. The Holy Spirit has anchored you in the truth of John 1:12. You received Christ. Christ received you. The bond is made. It is not a fragile thread that snaps when you feel anxious. It is a steel cable. It is a covenant. It is a promise. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that promise alive in you. He is the one who reminds you of it when your memory is foggy. He is the one who fights for you when you are too tired to fight for yourself. He is not a distant observer. He is a present helper. He is in the room with you. He is in your chest. He is in your mind. He is in your heart. He is the peace that passes understanding. He is the peace that you cannot feel, but that is still real.
You are standing in the kitchen. The tea is cold. The knot is in your chest. You are reading the verse. You are feeling the tightness. Now, you are convinced that the tightness means you are not believed. Stop. Listen. The tightness is not the enemy. The tightness is the evidence that you are human. The enemy is the lie that says the tightness cancels the truth. The truth is John 1:12. You received him. He gave you power. You are a child of God. That is the fact. The fact does not change when your feelings change. The fact is the foundation. The feelings are the furniture. You can move the furniture. You can rearrange it. Yet, you can take it out of the room. The foundation stays. The foundation is you, in Christ. The foundation is secure. The foundation is permanent. Still, the foundation is the peace of God. You do not have to feel it to have it. You do not have to see it to know it. And, you know it because God said it. And God does not lie. The Holy Spirit confirms it in your spirit. He is the witness. He is the proof. He is the peace. He is in you. Now, he is for you. He is with you. You are not alone. You are not failing. Yet, you are not disqualified. You are not unworthy. You are loved. Still, you are held. You are safe. The peace is yours. It is not coming. It is here. It is in the room. It is in the chest. And, it is in the spirit. It is the peace that passes understanding. It is the peace that guards your heart. It is the peace that you are inheriting. It is the peace that you are living in. Now, it is the peace that you are breathing. It is the peace that is yours.
Declare this over yourself
- Knot, your tightness has no authority to cancel the birth. John 1:12 states that I received Him and became a son of God, a legal fact that stands firm regardless of my chest. The weather of my feelings cannot erase the sky of my position, and I stand on that secure ground.
- Fear that my unbelief has disqualified me, get out of this room. I am a believing believer who holds the seal of the Holy Spirit, and that deposit guarantees my access to the Father. I speak this truth in the name of Jesus, and I fill this space with the peace that guards my heart.
- Father, I come in without knocking because I live here. I place my hand on my chest and receive the presence that is already within me. I am not waiting to be shown in, because I am already seated in Him.
