The kitchen table was set for four, but only three chairs had backs. The fourth was a folding metal thing that wobbled if you leaned on it. Sarah set the plates down and realized she had forgotten the bread. She went to the pantry, her hands shaking just a little, not from hunger but from the weight of the last hour. She had raised her voice. She had said words she could not take back. Now her husband was in the other room, and the silence in the house was so loud it hummed in her teeth. She looked at the wobbly chair. It was the one she usually sat in. Today, it felt like it did not belong to her. She pulled it out and sat on the edge, her hands folded in her lap, waiting for the feeling of rejection to finish loading so she could apologize again. But the feeling did not finish. It just settled, heavy and cold, like wet wool. She stared at the plate in front of her. It was full. It was warm. But she could not eat it, because she felt like a guest who had overstayed her welcome, waiting to be shown the door.
You Are Not a Tenant
The house is not a contract where manners decide if the door stays closed. A tenant pays rent with behavior, but a child does not. Galatians 4:7 declares that you are no longer a servant but a son. The Holy Spirit confirms this standing in your heart, so your seat is not revoked by your performance.
This love is not based on what you did this morning. It is based on who you are in Christ. The same Spirit who was given to you breathes this truth into your heart every time you open the Bible. Your status is secure.
Think about the word adoption. It is a legal term, but it is also a relational one. When a child is adopted, the paperwork is signed once. One does not have to re-sign the papers every night before bed. One does not have to perform a recital to prove membership in the family. The standing is granted. It is finished. It is sealed.
A bad day does not revoke the title of son or daughter. You are a child of the King, not a guest who must be polite to remain. The Holy Spirit who lives in you does not whisper that you are in trouble. The Spirit whispers that you are Mine. That is the voice of the Father, not the voice of your own fear.
The world rewards performance. It tells people to work harder and say the right things to be accepted. The Gospel flips the script. Jesus did not come to give us a better performance review. He came to give us a new name. A name is not something you earn. It is something you are given. Isaiah 43:1 declares, I have called you by your name, you are Mine. The Holy Spirit seals this identity, so your worth is a gift already received.
The blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin, not just the last one. It defines the person standing before the Father. Romans 8:16 states that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. One does not have to earn that testimony. One only has to receive it. The Holy Spirit does not grade performance. He affirms position.
The wobbly chair was not a punishment. It was just a chair. But the lie says a person is only as good as their last act of kindness. The truth says a person is as good as the blood of Christ. That blood is never used up. It is never diluted by anger or forgetfulness. 1 John 3:1 asks us to behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us. The Holy Spirit rests in that love, so standing is not shaken by a slip.
You are not a stranger in your own home. You are not a guest who is one bad word away from being asked to leave. You are a child, and the house is yours. Ephesians 1:13 says you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. That seal is the guarantee that the whole house belongs to you. You do not have to buy it back. You just have to walk in.
"As many as received him, to him he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name."John 1:12
Look at your life right now. What is the thing you are carrying that makes you feel like you have to perform? Is it a relationship where you are always walking on eggshells? Is it a church where you feel like you have to be perfect to be loved? Yet, is it your own heart, which keeps auditing you, keeping score, and waiting for you to fail? The written word says you are no longer a servant, and the Holy Spirit confirms this truth in your heart.
That thing is not your identity. It is a burden you are carrying that was never yours to carry. You have been holding it for so long that you have forgotten it is heavy. You have forgotten that you can put it down. Still, you have forgotten that you are not a worker in a house. You are a child. Scripture puts it plainly, for the Spirit of adoption has been sent into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
This is the moment to stop earning. This is the moment to stop performing. This is the moment to sit down at the table and eat. Not because you have been good. Not because you have apologized enough. And, not because you have cleaned up the mess. But because you are loved. Because the blood of Jesus has already paid the price. Because the Holy Spirit is already in you, sealing you, claiming you, calling you His, as the word says you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.
You do not need to fix your manners today. You do not need to fix your performance today. Now, you need to rest. You need to receive. You need to let go of the wobbly chair and sit in the one that was made for you. The one with the back. The one that is steady. The one that says, "You are home." The Spirit of truth guides you into this rest, and His word says, let us come boldly to the throne of grace.
Declare this over yourself
- The wobbly chair, you do not get to decide who belongs at this table. His word says the house is a family, and the blood of Jesus has already signed the papers. My seat is steady because the King of kings has claimed it as mine.
- The fear that I am a guest who overstayed my welcome, get out of my house. The Holy Spirit seals my standing, and I am not a tenant paying rent with my behavior. In the name of Jesus, I am the heir, not the employee, and I am sitting down to eat.
- Father, You are the one who gave me this name, and I am holding it today. Scripture puts it plainly that I am Your child, and nothing I do this week alters that fact. I am walking in, not because I earned it, but because it is mine.
